Welcome to the very first issue of The Hardware Handbook, Allen’s new newsletter.
Here you’ll find the latest updates on all things Allen. From our performance hardware to exciting news from our world-class Team Allen athletes, we’ve got it covered.
In this inaugural issue, we reflect on the 2024 season—a year in which we proudly supported a diverse array of top-tier events, sailors, and classes, while introducing a range of performance sailing hardware to enhance their success.
The 49er is an adrenaline-pumping racing machine that demands top-notch control and rock-solid reliability from its hardware. At Allen, we’re all about crafting high-performance sailing gear designed for sailors who mean business.
In this guide, we’ll break down the fittings on a 49er, system by system, making it super easy to see what you need and why. Whether you’re tweaking your setup for lightweight or dialling it in for minimal friction, this guide has you covered.
Check out the list below for a breakdown of the key fittings and don’t miss the full video tour of a seriously tricked-out boat!
New Big Boat Pad-Tii: The Ultimate Soft-Attach Fitting for Keelboats
Since launching the Pad-Tii range in 2019, it has provided sailors with reliable, low-profile deck fittings for soft attachments, answering industry demand for secure and minimalistic attachment points.
So, we are excited to introduce our latest innovation and to expand the Pad-Tii range with two new options suitable for use on big boats.
The Big Boat Pad-Tii has been designed specifically for larger keelboats. This new deck fitting offers a secure, adaptable, and low-profile solution to suit the larger rope and working loads you’ve been waiting for.
We focused on creating a fitting that balances high performance with simplicity, making rigging flexible and maintenance straightforward. The Pad-Tii’s durable, streamlined design integrates seamlessly with your boat’s deck, making it a super useful attachment point for any soft attachment hardware.
The Moth class is often seen as the pinnacle of dinghy sailing, combining high-performance sailing, technical precision, and world-class regattas. At events like Foiling Week, a special competition has been established – the SuMoth Challenge.
This competition focuses on sustainability within the Moth class, inviting university and postgraduate teams to compete. The boats are judged not only on their performance but also on their use of sustainable materials and manufacturing techniques, with innovation and eco-friendly design taking precedence over racing results.
Endeavour Trophy 2024 – Champion of Champions Event.
Oliver Groves and Esther Parkhurst, representing the 2000 class, claimed the prestigious Endeavour Trophy after a nail-biting weekend of racing on the River Crouch. The duo, from Beaver Sailing Club in North Yorkshire, showcased remarkable consistency throughout the two days, ultimately securing victory by a clear four-point margin.
Day one saw Groves and Parkhurst take the lead after four races, with a series of strong results (1st, 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd), positioning them as overnight leaders. Despite their impressive performance, they faced stiff competition from Waszp sailors Sam Whaley and Jess Hammett. Whaley and Hammett dominated much of the first day with three race wins, but a disappointing 11th place in the second race left them trailing by six points. Whaley later reflected on their tactics, explaining how their focus was on strong starts, sailing fast, and capitalising on the shifting conditions. He expressed optimism for the final day, hoping to discard the 11th-place result and make a strong push for the top spot.
Allen Brothers is excited to announce our participation in METSTRADE 2024, the premier trade show for marine equipment, materials, and systems, from 19th to 21st November at the RAI Amsterdam. As always, this event is a fantastic opportunity to discover the latest innovations in the marine industry, and we are eager to showcase our newest product developments to our customers and partners.
We invite you to visit us in Hall 1, Stand 516, where we will present an exciting range of new and existing products designed to enhance sailboat performance. Among the highlights will be:
The Snipe dinghy is a two-person, one-design racing sailboat that has existed since 1931. It was designed by William F. Crosby and is known for its versatility and popularity in competitive sailing. The Snipe is 15 feet 6 inches (4.72 meters) long and has a beam (width) of 5 feet (1.52 meters). It has a simple rig with a mainsail and a jib but no spinnaker.
The Snipe class is known for tactical racing, where strategy, boat handling, and understanding wind conditions are more important than pure speed. It’s an international class with fleets around the world and has been particularly popular in the U.S., Europe, and South America.
The boat is stable and well-suited for sailors of different skill levels, making it a favourite for both competitive racing and casual sailing.
We are thrilled to announce our latest product update – the Pro-Ratchet 40, a high-performance 40mm ratchet block featuring an all-new aluminium sheave which provides exceptional grip and control like never before.
The New Pro-Ratchet 40 is our first ratchet block to feature an aluminium sheave which has been designed to offer additional grip on the rope, allowing for greater control of your sheets in all conditions. So, whether trimming the spinnaker sheet in a gust or fine-tuning your jib, the Pro-Ratchet 40 is built to perform.
But this isn’t just about grip – it’s about giving you confidence on the water. The anodised aluminium sheave is lightweight yet incredibly strong, ensuring you have a product you can rely on to give you long-lasting performance time and time again. With its sleek, compact design, the Pro-Ratchet 40 is ideal for sailors who demand the best from their gear.
We’ve also incorporated a user-friendly on/off switch for the ratchet mechanism, so you can quickly adjust to changing conditions without missing a beat, and more importantly, without removing your gloves or needing a tool. The switch can be used even when under load. So, no need to dump the sheets if you want to change the feel of your line.
With this new product, we continue our commitment to providing sailors with innovative solutions that enhance their experience on the water. We’re excited to see how the new Pro-Ratchet 40 will help you sail smarter, faster, and with more control than ever before.
We’re thrilled to announce our latest product range: Tii-Bone.
As a company passionate about sailing and dedicated to delivering performance marine hardware, we’ve designed the new Tii-Bone range to make rigging lighter, easier and more high-performance.
Versatile and Easy to Use
The Tii-Bone range has been developed to streamline the rigging of halyards, sheets and control lines. Its unique, non-slip design is perfect for various rigging tasks, whether you’re lashing, tensioning, or securing lines and blocks. We’ve made it easy to use, so whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to the sport, you’ll find it a valuable addition to your rigging toolkit.
The 707 was designed in 1995 by David Thomas and built by Hunter Boats. Usually sailed with four or five crew and regularly reaching speeds of 5 knots upwind and 12 to 14 knots downwind. With a length of 7.07 m and a beam of 2.53m, the 707 carries a fractional symmetrical spinnaker. It is a rewarding and exciting boat to race in all conditions.
Below is a fully Allen-approved fitting list for a Hunter 707. All the items in this list are class-legal and are easy to swap out for old existing hardware.
