New Traveller Car Systems: Size 14 and Size 19

new traveller car system

A traveller car system is an essential component used on dinghies and keelboats to manage the position of the mainsheet, jib sheet and various other systems that require adjustment. It allows sailors to fine-tune sail trim, improving handling, efficiency, and most importantly – speed!

Application: Designed specifically for lower-loaded applications on dinghies and catamarans.

Effortless Control: Features recirculating Torlon ball bearings for smooth adjustments under load.

Track Specifications: Offered in lengths up to 3 meters, pre-drilled and anodised black.

Comprehensive Accessories: End stops with blocks and beckets are available to create various purchase system controls for the car.

Application: Built to handle the toughest dinghy and catamaran setups. Also perfect for lower-load keelboat jib and mainsheet applications on boats up to 28 feet.

Smooth Operation: Equipped with recirculating Torlon ball bearings, facilitating seamless sail adjustments even under significant load.

Track Specifications: Available in lengths up to 3 meters, pre-drilled and anodised in black for durability and aesthetic appeal. Pin stop track is also available.

Comprehensive Accessories: Includes end stops with blocks and beckets to complete the purchase system.

Additional Options: Pin-stop cars and tracks are available for creating simplified genoa or jib sheeting systems.

Both Size 14 and Size 19 ranges incorporate a “modular” base car, allowing for the attachment of P-clips or cheek blocks. This design enables sailors to create various purchase systems tailored to their specific needs for controlling car position. The base car also facilitates easy attachment of blocks or lines via the removable flip-flop shackle.

As well as a complete revamp of the “base car”, we have also included a few completely new designs, including:

90-degree Tii-On Car: The middle bar is set at 90 degrees, so it can be used to run a line straight through for up and down control of a jib sheet or splicing/ tying directly too. Available in both Size 14 and 19.

Long Car: Designed to handle higher working loads compared to the standard-length version.

Sheave Car: Two ball-bearing sheaves mounted directly to the top of the car make this version ideal for self-tacking jib systems on small keelboats or catamarans.

Pin Stop Cars: Our Size 19 range now includes two new pin stop cars, designed for easy genoa or spinnaker block attachments. No need for bulky, specialised Genoa cars – just attach the right size block for your line, and you’ve got a sleek, high-performance Genoa sheeting system.

Upgrading is easy! The new Size 14 cars are compatible with our old A.816 track (Mini Profile). Similarly, Size 19 cars are compatible with the old A.819 track (Maxi Profile).

Regularly wash traveller cars with fresh water using a powerful hose to prevent grit, dirt, and debris from accumulating in the bearing system. This buildup can impair ball-bearing function, leading to damage or failure.

At the end of each season, perform a full service: remove the car from the track, take out the bearings, and soak all parts in soapy water. Clean thoroughly before reassembly.

Clean the track before reinstalling the car.

Inspect the ball bearings during servicing. If replacements are needed, they can be ordered here.

Proper care ensures maximum longevity and performance of your traveller cars.

Never apply grease or any other type of lubricant to the bearing system! Using grease may seem like a good idea, but it will do more harm than good. It creates a sticky surface that attracts grit, dirt, and other debris, which can build up over time and prevent the bearings from functioning smoothly. To keep your system working as designed, always keep it clean and free from any lubricants. If maintenance is needed, simply rinse with fresh water and ensure the bearings remain free from obstructions.

The Maximum Working Load (MWL) represents the highest load at which the traveller car can roll or slide smoothly without causing damage to the bearings. While the car is capable of withstanding higher static loads, it is not advisable to move it under such conditions, as this may compromise the integrity of the bearings.

Need to handle higher loads? Simply use multiple cars in your system to distribute the load more effectively. To link two cars together, you can use a Tii-On car with a Tii-shackle for a secure connection. Alternatively, a stainless steel plate can be mounted via the tapped holes on the base car.
