Ram Blocks – The “big boy” range grows
Two years ago we introduced the aptly nicknamed “big boy” block to the world. So, in 2023 it should come as no surprise that the “big boy” has now grown into a range of products. The more correctly named, ram block range, is now available in 150, 85 & 50mm sheave sizes.
You might be shocked to see those sheave diameters, but yes you did read correctly. And you shouldn’t be surprised. Here at Allen, we are much more than just small boat hardware specialists. We are engineering experts and we produce a vast range of equipment for many different business sectors.
However, we might expect you to be a little curious how a family-run business which specialises in performance sailing hardware for racing dinghies makes the jump to blocks which weigh around 5 kilos, and have breaking loads of 28 tonnes.
Well, our friends at Ocean Marine Systems (OMS) approached us to help solve some rope management problems they faced when developing custom hydraulic rams for a project of theirs. Our design team jumped at the opportunity and developed the “big boy”.
Fast forward two years and OMS have been so happy with the quality and performance of the “big boy” that they asked us to develop a further two sizes of ram blocks. First was the 50mm sheave diameter single block. Then, an 85mm version was needed in both a standard single and single with becket.
We have been fortunate to work with the team at Allen when developing these blocks for our hydraulic rams. We bring our superyacht knowledge and Allen bring their excellent rope management skills. The end result is a very high end product and a very happy customer!
Mark Barwell, Director, OMS.
This ram block range, although a very niche product and customised for use with hydraulic rams, has been designed so we can, should the query arise, adapt the attachment method to suit other rigging options.
Allen and OMS both specialise in different ends of the marine industry. So, as British manufacturing companies both with a focus on premium products, our working relationship seemed a no brainer. The end result is products that really complement each other.
