Team Fletcher-Sign training in Weymouth June 2010 Team Fletcher-Sign training in Weymouth June 2010

Last weekend we had a great little open meeting down in Weymouth. There was a good turn-out of 11 British boats and some champagne sailing conditions out in Weymouth bay. The racing was run by Skandia Team GBR coaches Harvey Hillary and Ian Barker, who actually turned out to be better than half the Olympic race committee's! With the first start at 12 we were in by 3 after 4 good races. The racing proved to be quite tricky with a NE offshore wind that was shifting all over the place. We had 4 solid races scoring a 3,2,3,3 which was good enough for 2nd but we felt that we really deserved more. Once we were in there was just enough time for a quick de-brief with everyone before watching the F1 qualifying and some goalie who looked like he could have done with some builders gloves!

The next day and the coaches decided we may as well get another 4 races in. This time with the wind from the west it was a bit more stable and was an awesome day out on the water once the breeze had built. We started the day off well with a bullet in the first race but then it went downhill from then. The next race we came in 2nd, then after being on the wrong settings in the 3rd race we finished 3rd. At this point we were 1 point behind the leaders Stevie and Ben but needed to beat them by 2 places on the water to secure first. After a bad start and our jib halyard coming uncleated we were last! Not an ideal way to start the race but we pulled it up to 4th by the end of the 1st lap, then got a penalty for trying to cross Stevie and Ben. After taking our penalty (360 so a tack and a gybe), we knew we had to something pretty special win. Which we did not do, after making some big gains down the run again it was just not enough to win overall.

Still we had 2 great days racing and were able to practise what we have been putting all of our time into training. So not a really good weekend apart from the football!
