Todd Riccardi - F18 Update
Allen Brothers Sailing Team Update: F18
Members of the Allen sailing team have been getting in plenty of time on the water revelling in the recent warm conditions around the UK and Europe.
Further afield in the United States, our North American distributor Bainbridge International’s employee Todd Riccardi has been making a good impression within the F18 fleet in the States with a third place at the 2013 F18 East Coast Champs held in Hyannis, MassachusettsJuly 26-28.
“After rigging on the first day inthe pouringrain, the weather cleared up but the winds remained over 30 knots and racing was cancelled for the day.Conditions on Saturday were 15-20 Knots with 3-4 foot waves on Saturday with 5-8 knots on Sunday. The F18 class held 8 races, a few unfortunate mistakes and light air on Sunday prevented us from winning the regatta which had been our goal”.
This event attracts over 250 boats with 100 Club 420s. The highlight of the regatta was the F18 class taking youth sailors for blastingrides around the harborafter racing on Saturday. The Yacht Club, Parents, Coaches, and Sailors were so excited by this that they awarded the F18 class the sportsmanship award for the regatta.
“We had excellent upwind speed in the big breeze on Saturday thanks in part to our great 60mm 9:1Allen Mainsheet system. While much of the rest of the fleet uses 10:1, our 9:1 seems to be the perfect compromise of sheeting power and reduced line. This makes sheeting much easier and we are convinced the positive holding power of the Allen ratchet makes up for the reduced purchase. One upgrade we made to our mainsheet system is we put a Mega Pro Fairlead on the cleat. Since our cleat is raised up tonever use upwind the Mega Pro Fairlead eliminates wear on the fairlead”.
